The International Phytotechnology Society (IPS)

is a nonprofit, worldwide professional society comprised of individuals and institutions engaged in the science and application of using plants to deal with environmental problems. IPS’s mission is to promote research, education, training, and application of those technologies that use plants to deal with problems of environmental contamination, carbon sequestration, agricultural health, the lack of ecosystem services in urban communities, and ecological restoration. For more about IPS, click here.

The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station (CAES)

was established in 1875 as the first agricultural experiment station (AES) in the United States. The primary focus of the CAES is research in the areas of agriculture, the environment, public health and food safety, as well as to educate the public and to transfer new findings to citizenry. The AES system now employs over 13,000 scientists, not only in the USA but also in Puerto Rico, Guam, the Virgin Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, and the Northern Mariana Islands. The central mission of the AES is “to conduct original research, investigation, and experiments which contribute to the establishment and maintenance of the agricultural industry in the United States.” At the CAES, we live this mission through our motto, ‘'Putting Science to Work for Society.”

This IPC2026 Conference

will serve scientists, consultants, designers, engineers, builders, regulators, site owners, and community environmental non-profits coming together to explore how phytotechnologies can address current and emerging environmental challenges.

This Conference will add extra focus on applied opportunities for phytotechnologies, including those in areas of green infrastructure for stormwater management, urban brownfield reclamation, food and health safety, and general resilience improvements that living plants provide. All of our typical IPS session topics will also be offered.

Stay tuned for more info on keynote speakers and other conference highlights and specifics.

Host City

Providence is the deeply creative and ethnically diverse capital city of Rhode Island (watch "The Secret Mall Apartment"- a true movie filmed here recently), and home to the famous WaterFire Providence ( waterfire.org ). Located at the top of Narragansett Bay, which feeds to the Ocean, Providence has tidal rivers running right through downtown. The Seekonk, Moshassuck, and Woonasquatucket Rivers all converge in downtown. Much work has been done to unbury the rivers from industrial influence, and awareness is growing rapidly of how green infrastructure or nature-based solutions can add ecosystem services to urban life and improve water qualities and stormwater management for the city.

Rhode Island's state-wide commitment to municipal and coastal resilience can be seen in the Municipal Resilience Program and the Resilient Rhody: state of resilience report 2024. All 39 of RI's cities have been certified in the Municipal Resilience Program and voter-approved funding through state green bonds in the amount of $16 million was dedicated to municipal resilience projects in 2024/2025.
